Spalted Rainbow Tulip Poplar & Walnut | Central Kentucky

TATIANA is a handmade spalted rainbow tulip poplar lidded bowl with a walnut lid, all hand turned on my lathe. All of the wood was responsibly sourced here in Central Kentucky (the poplar in Franklin County and the walnut right here in Bourbon County). The walnut lid has traces of the sapwood visible on the edges, which contrasts nicely with the darker heartwood. The show stopper, however, is the poplar wood with traces of pink hues and dramatic spalting visible throughout. This truly is a one-of-a-kind piece.

Spalting occurs when wood begins the initial stages of decay and then subsequently is dried to prevent further decay. The partial decay is called spalting and gives the wood dark contrasting lines and streaks where fungus began to attack the wood.

“Rainbow Poplar” is yellow poplar that was stained by prolonged exposure to minerals that leech into the wood, causing a wide range of colors to form. This occurs when a log lays on the ground in just the right environment for just the right amount of time making it a pretty rare occurrence.

With the lid, the bowl measures 4-7/8″ wide by 2-7/8″ tall. Without the lid, the bowl is approximately 4-1/2″ wide and 2-1/4″ tall, with an interior measurement of 3-7/8″ wide x 1-5/8″ deep. The wood was finished with high friction polish to bring out its natural color, grain, and tone.
