Nicks
Cherry Burl / Bourbon County, KY
NICKS is a cherry burl wood bowl that was hand turned on my lathe from wood sustainably sourced here in Bourbon County, Kentucky. This particular piece of cherry was from the crotch of a large branch where a burl had developed.
Burls are knotty growths on trees where the wood has grown in a deformed manner. The deformation of the wood as the tree grew created a unique and visually striking grain when viewed from any vantage point. Within the burl were voids and sections of decay. Hence, there are large holes and dark decayed portions of the wood, and the thicknesses of the walls change in relation to the natural disfigurement of the wood. The holes and decayed portions were left intact and add to the uniqueness of the piece.
The bowl is approximately 5″ wide by 4-1/8″ tall and was polished with food safe walnut oil and finished with a walnut wax containing a blend of beeswax and carnauba wax to provide a durable finish and rich luster.
