Kristina

Walnut | Bourbon County, KY

KRISTINA is a modern walnut wood bowl that I hand turned on my lathe from wood that was responsibly sourced right here in Bourbon County, Kentucky. One of my favorite shapes to play with is the iconic flying saucer, popularized in the mid-20th-century when sightings and encounters with UFOs commonly were reported in the media. This is the first time I’ve made this form using walnut wood, and I’m really pleased with the result.

Remnants of the wood’s inner bark are visible in the “Jupiter’s Eye” prominently featured on the rim of the bowl. Additionally, it should be noted that a worm hole revealed itself as I turned the outer rim. This is not a chip in the wood, but a natural feature. There are also several other wormholes on the underside of the rim (or the “skirt,” as I call it sometimes). Furthermore, the pith (or center of the trunk) became visible as I cleaned out the interior of the bowl. I consider worm holes and natural cracks to be features of the wooden vessels that I make, and feel that they that add to the uniqueness and beauty of this and my other pieces. All natural “features” in the wood have been reinforced.

The overall walnut wood bowl measures 14-7/8″ wide by 1-7/8″ tall, with the inner bowl portion measuring approximately 9-1/4″ wide and 1-5/8″ deep. The wood was polished with food safe walnut oil and finished with carnauba and beeswax to provide a durable finish and rich luster.
