Hank

Maple Burl / Fayette County, KY

HANK is a maple burl wood plate that was hand turned on my lathe and made from responsibly sourced wood from Fayette County, Kentucky. This particular piece of maple was from the burl of the tree. Burls are knotty growths on trees where the wood has grown in a deformed manner. The deformation of the wood as the tree grew created a unique and visually striking grain when viewed from any vantage point.

Several small worm holes also were present, and natural holes/voids in the burl can be seen along the plate’s edge and in the foot of the vessel. They were left as-is and add to the uniqueness of the piece.

The plate measures 5-3/8″ wide and approximately 1″ high and was finished with high friction polish, which brings out the natural changes in coloring, tone, and grain in the cedar wood.
