Cassandra

Spalted Dogwood / Franklin County, KY

CASSANDRA is a spalted dogwood natural edge wood bowl that I hand turned on my lathe from wood responsibly sourced in nearby Franklin County, Kentucky.

Every now and then I luck onto an exceptionally gorgeous piece of wood, and this is one of those occasions. I’m told that this dogwood tree lived a long life and was a cherished gem gracing Shelby Street in Kentucky’s capital city with its beautiful pink flowers every spring. I feel privileged to be able to give the tree a second life where hopefully it continues to bring joy to those that see it.

A few worm holes are visible in the wood, which combined with the natural edge and dramatic spalting make this a very one-of-a-kind piece. A small natural crack in the base, common with wood such as this, has been reinforced.

This bowl measures approximately 5-1/4″ wide, 2-5/8″ high, and 2-1/4″ deep. I finished the bowl with Terra Nova NaturOil which is FDA approved, kosher, environmentally friendly, non-toxic, free of dyes, perfumes, and nut oils that can cause allergic reactions, and protects against drying, cracking, and water damage. The NaturOil was followed by a coating of beeswax which I apply for added protection.
