Bridgette
Spalted Hackberry / Franklin County, KY
BRIDGETTE is a spalted hackberry wood bowl that was hand turned on my lathe. The simplicity of the form highlights the beauty of the spalted wood.
To create this spalting, the hackberry wood was allowed to begin initial stages of decay and then subsequently dried to prevent further decay. The partial decay is called spalting and gives the wood dark contrasting lines and streaks where fungus began to attack the wood.
This bowl measures approximately 4-7/8″ wide, 3-1/2″ tall, and 3″ deep. The wood was finished with high friction polish, which brings out the natural changes in coloring, tone, and grain in the hackberry wood. Be sure to note, though, that the finish is not food safe and the bowl should not be used to hold water or other liquids.
